Fame India Scheme


FAME II (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles) is a government of India initiative aimed at accelerating the development of electric vehicles. This is significant in light of global efforts to address climate change. For the second phase of this project, the Indian government has set out Rs 10,000 crores. This programme was created to help meet the objectives of the National Electric Mobility Mission Plan (NEMMP). Phase I of FAME ran from 2015 to 2019, while Phase II began in 2019 and will be completed by 2022.





FAME India Scheme Phase II 





Some of the key features of the FAME II scheme are given below.





  • Amount of Rs 10,000 crores will be allocated over a three-year period, from 2019 to 2022.
  • A total of Rs 1,000 crores has been made aside for the installation of electric car charging stations. It has proposed that each electric bus receive one slow charging unit and ten electric buses receive one rapid charging station.
  • The government would provide incentives for the purchase of about 5 lakh three-wheelers, 7000 electric buses, and 35,000 four-wheelers.
  • The monitoring authority for the FAME India Scheme is the Department of Heavy Industries, Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises (https://fame2.heavyindustry.gov.in/).

The following steps are taken by the Central Government to make Electric vehicles more affordable.





  • Manufacturers participating in the development of electric cars will be offered incentives.
  • Manufacturers active in the development of lithium ion batteries and electric motors will be offered incentives.
  • States have been asked by the Centre to develop policies and give incentives to producers and purchasers.
