The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (formerly the Department of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, which was established in July 2014) was established in November 2014 to drive the ‘Skill India' agenda in ‘Mission Mode,' combining scale and quality of skilling efforts with speed. What is the National Skill Development Mission?
The National Skill Development Mission was established with the goal of bringing together initiatives related to skill training from diverse sectors and states. Along with integrating and coordinating skilling activities, the mission would speed up decision-making across sectors in order to accomplish high-quality skilling on a broad scale.

Mission Statement
“To quickly scale up skill development activities in India by developing an end-to-end, outcome-focused implementation framework that combines employer demands for well-trained skilled workers with Indian people' ambitions for long-term livelihoods.”
National Skill Development Mission Objectives
- The implementation of the National Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF) will create long-term and short-term training opportunities, leading to productive jobs and career enhancement.
- Using a framework to maintain a balance between the needs of industry / employers and the workforce will lead to sustainable livelihoods through training.
- Provide means to re-qualify and upgrade the skills of the workforce in unorganized sectors of industry.
- Ensure high quality training standards through high quality education and facilities that meet national and international standards to create a highly skilled workforce and employment opportunities Global.
- Support underprivileged and underprivileged sections of society through targeted awareness programs and targeted skills development activities.
- Facilitate the transition between the vocational training system and the formal education system, through the credit transfer system.
- Maintain a national database, known as the Labor Market Information System (LMIS), which will serve as a portal to link the demand and supply of skilled labor in the country .
- The LMIS, on the one hand, will provide citizens with important information on skills improvement initiatives across the country.
- On the other hand, it will also serve as a platform to monitor the performance of existing skills development programs underway in all states of India.

Government Initiatives to Promote Skill Development
- Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY): Aims to offer free vocational training courses to young Indians.
- Strengthening skills to increase industrial value - STRATEGY: The main objective of the program is to improve the performance of ITIs.
- This program is a project of the Indian government supported by the World Bank and the objective of which is to improve the relevance and effectiveness of vocational training provided by industrial training institutes (ITI) and apprenticeship.
- Saathi Skills Mentoring Program: MSDE has also launched the Saathi Skills program which aims to harness the country's youth on the various paths of the India Skills mission and increase their aspirations for skills development.
- SANKALP: The centrally funded program is in partnership with the World Bank and focuses on the skills ecosystem at the district level through convergence and coordination. Applicants can know the details of SANKALP and the program of effort, goals and objectives at the given link.
- Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Kendra (PMKK): These are leading model training centers envisioned to create ambitious value-proven benchmarks for competency-based skills development training.
- Industrial Training Center (ITI): To expand and modernize the existing long-term training ecosystem in India.
