National Water Mission - Jal Jeevan Mission


In 2011, the National Water Mission was established. With per capita water availability decreasing every year, dwindling groundwater tables, lengthy droughts, and floods caused by excessive rainfall, water conservation and storage is a major problem for all nations. This topic will be important in both the Prelims and Mains of the IAS Exam.





The winners of the National Water Awards 2020 will be announced soon, as the Department of Water Resources will launch the 3rd National Water Awards on December 10, 2020.





Impact of climate change on water resources.

  3. Manage water resources in such a way that there is an equal distribution of water across the nation.




The objective of the National Water Mission





  • 20% increase in water efficiency through regulation, differentiated benefits and pricing.
  • A significant part of the water needs of urban areas will be met through recycling wastewater.
  • The water needs of coastal towns must be met through the application of low temperature desalination technologies.
  • Consult with countries to ensure that basin-level management strategies are in place to deal with changes in rainfall and river flows due to climate change.
  • Improve storage above and below ground, collect rainwater.
  • Implement large-scale irrigation programs based on sprinklers, drip irrigation, and trench-and-trench irrigation. Document





The National Mission for the Salvation of the Nation consists of 2 volumes. One volume deals with the funds needed for the mission, the research and development that will be needed for the mission, oversees the mission and the composition of the various committees charged with directing the mission. Volume 2 of the engagement document deals with reports produced by six different sub-committees. The subcommittees are

WRIS





The construction of a Water Resources Information System was a significant milestone in this objective (WRIS). This satisfies the mission's purpose of establishing a public database on water resources.





National Water Mission Awards 2019





  • According to the document of the national water supply mission, the mission has 5 goals and 39 strategies. One of the strategies is to incentivize the organization through rewards. In line with this mission, it was decided to award the "National Water Mission Awards" to recognize excellence achieved in sustainable water management, efficient use of water, and excellence in water conservation.
  • Awards were given to the following 10 categories.




  • Comprehensive Public Domain Water Database - Recipients of this award are Department of Water Resources, Government of Andhra Pradesh and Department of Water Resources and CAD, Government of Telangana.
  • Assessment of the impact of climate change on water resources - This winner is the Environmental Planning and Coordination Organization (EPCO), Ministry of Environment, Bhopal.
  • Promoting action by citizens and states for water conservation, improvement and conservation - Laureates are the Department of Water Resources, Government of Rajasthan and the Department of Land Conservation and water, Government of Punjab.
  • Focus on vulnerable areas, including overexploited areas - The winners are Ambuja Cement Fund and the State Groundwater Bureau, Telangana government.
  • Increase water efficiency by 20% - (Individuals / farmers / locals)
  • Increase water efficiency by 20% - (WUA, SHGs, RWAs)
  • Increase water efficiency 'water use 20% increase in water use (Public agencies - ULB`s / Cities, government organizations, etc.) - The winner is the Department of Water Supply and rural sanitation of Telangana, governor of Telangana for the mission of his destiny Bhagiratha.
  • 20% increase in water efficiency (industry / company) - Winner is Hindustan Coca Cola Beverage Pvt Ltd, Guntur; Lalitpur Power Generation Company Ltd, Raymond UCO Denim Pvt Ltd.
  • Promotion of Integrated Water Resources Management at Basin Level - The winner is the Department of Water Resources, Department of Water Resources Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra.




Jal Shakti Abhiyan





It is a campaign launched by the Ministry of Jal Shakti with an emphasis on 1592 stressed blocks in 256 districts.





Why will Jal Jeevan Mission be a boost for rural economy?
