What is PM Garib Kalyan Scheme?

Announcements made by the Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman on 26th March 2020 are mentioned below:





  • To give insurance coverage of Rs 50 lakhs each COVID-19-affected health professional.
  • Under the PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, 80 crore impoverished people would receive free resources of 5 kilogramme wheat or rice and 1 kilogramme of selected pulses over the next three months.
  • For the next three months, 20 crore women with Jan Dhan accounts would receive Rs 500 every month.
  • The MNREGA payment would be increased to Rs 202 per day, benefiting 13.62 crore households.
  • State governments have been instructed to use the Building and Construction Workers Welfare Fund to offer aid to construction workers by the federal government.

Benefits of PM Garib Kalyan Package





To reduce the loss caused by the outbreak of Covid-19 in India, the Finance Minister launched the PM Garib Kalyan Package on March 26th, 2020 for the BPL families. 





Some of the benefits provided by the PM Garib Kalyan Package are as follows:





  • An Insurance Cover of Rs. 50 Lakh




Under the PM Garib Kalyan Scheme, every health professional in government hospitals and healthcare centres who treats Covid-19 patients would be covered by a Rs. 50 lakh insurance policy if an accident occurs. Safai karamcharis, ward-boys, nurses, ASHA workers, paramedics, technicians, physicians, and specialists are among the health staff. This programme would encompass all government health centres, wellness centres, and hospitals in both the Centers and States. To combat the pandemic, almost 22 lakh health professionals will be covered by insurance.





  • Free Pulses for the next 3 months under PM Garib Kalyan Ann Yojana




The Indian government announced that under the PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, 80 crore impoverished individuals will receive free resources of 5 kilogramme wheat or rice and 1 kilogramme of selected pulses for three months. Over the next three months, each of them was given double their current allowance to guarantee that all Covid-19-affected BPL households had enough protein.





  • Benefit to farmers




The Government front-loaded Rs. 2,000 paid to farmers in the first week of April under the existing PM Kisan Yojana which will benefit 8.7 crore farmers.





  • Free LPG cylinders to the BPL families




On March 26, 2020, India's Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, said that under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, BPL (Below Poverty Line) families will receive free cylinders for three months after the announcement (PMUY).





  • To help the low wage earners in organized sectors




Wage-earners earning less than Rs. 15,000 per month in enterprises with fewer than 100 employees would also benefit from the PM Garib Kalyan Package. Wage employees who were at risk of losing their jobs were given 24 percent of their monthly pay into their PF accounts for three months from the announcement date, ensuring that their jobs were not disrupted.





Apart from the aforementioned perks, under the PM Garib Kalyan Yojana, MNREGA pay would be enhanced by Rs. 20 with effect from April 1, 2020. The MNREGA salary rise would offer an additional Rs. 2,000 in benefits per year to each worker, benefiting about 13.62 crore families.
