Maharshi Dayanand University, originally known as Rohtak University, Rohtak, was founded in 1976 by the Haryana Legislative Assembly under Act No. 25 of 1975, with the goal of promoting inter-disciplinary higher education and research in the domains of environmental, ecological, and life sciences. In 1977, it was renamed Maharshi Dayanand University in honour of Maharshi Dayanand, a brilliant visionary and social reformer. In its early years, it was a unitary and residential institution, but in November 1978, it became an affiliating university.

The University secured the recognition of University Grants Commission – the higher education regulatory body of India - for central Govt. grants in 16 Mar, 1979.
The University is located at Rohtak in the state of Haryana - about 75 kms from Delhi on Delhi-Hisar National Highway (NH-10), and is about 240 kms from Chandigarh, the State Capital. It is well connected both by rail as well as road. Rohtak is the education hub of the State with excellent facilities for education in all fields of knowledge.

The university campus covers an area of 622 acres, with advanced architecture and a magnificent road network, presenting the wonder of the harmony between architecture and nature. Education and research programs are delivered through its 38 departments. There are up to 12 teaching buildings, 19 dormitories, an elegant Vivekananda library and 6 branches, a magnificent Tagore Auditorium equipped with modern equipment and facilities, a spectacular student activity center, a university school, a health center, a home for teachers. and staff, gyms, swimming pools, multifunctional gyms, community centers, printers, dining rooms, shopping centers and administrative buildings. Approximately 550 residential units are available to teaching and non-teaching staff. There is a very powerful campus network, a combination of wired and Wi-Fi technology, with a 1 Gbps internet connection. The peaceful "Yajanshala" meets the spiritual and health needs of the campus community. Branches of the National Bank of India, the National Bank of Punjab and the Central Cooperative Bank are other campus facilities.
In addition, the university also opened three specialized and project-related research centers through the M.D.U Satellite Research Institute, Gurgaon. The 3-year Bachelor of Laws (Honors) course can also start after approval from the Indian Bar Association.
